Permits and street rules

On most Covina blocks, parking the truck at the curb is easy. The City of Covina Engineering Division, part of Public Works, issues encroachment permits for work in the public right-of-way, and you can reach them at 626-384-5490 or Engineering@covinaca.gov to ask what applies to a moving truck on your block. Whether Covina requires a dedicated permit for moving-truck curb staging, as opposed to a general right-of-way encroachment permit, is worth confirming with the city directly, since the advance notice and processing time vary. One Covina wrinkle: if your address sits in the unincorporated Charter Oak or Covina Hills pockets, the jurisdiction is Los Angeles County Public Works, not the city, so the contact changes block to block. Pulling the permit and posting it is your job, not ours, but we'll tell you exactly where we need the truck to sit so you can request the right spot. On the tighter downtown and hillside streets especially, that reserved space is the difference between a short carry and hauling everything half a block.

Grand and Barranca apartment access

The walk-up and garden apartment complexes along Grand Avenue and Barranca Avenue usually come with shared driveways, limited on-site parking, and a management office that wants the loading spot arranged ahead of time, so coordinating with the building is part of it. Reserving that loading window is yours to handle with management, not ours. We don't book it or hold the driveway for you, but once you've set the window, we coordinate our arrival to it. On site, we protect the shared walkways and any common stairwell, run the load on dollies, and keep it moving so we clear the spot before the time runs out. Limited on-site parking means we'll often work from a curb space nearby, so it helps to know where the complex lets trucks stage. Downtown along Citrus Avenue, commercial moves face metered, time-limited curb parking, pedestrian foot traffic, and the occasional street event that closes curb access, so timing matters even more. If a landlord asks for a certificate of insurance, a standard general-liability COI is included for commercial jobs, and custom additional-insured wording is quoted separately. Parking, narrow driveways, and the hillside

Most of Covina sits on flat valley floor, so through the central grid and northern tracts it's parking and driveway width that shape access, not grade. In the older blocks around Badillo Street and San Bernardino Road, and in Charter Oak, the driveways run shallow with narrow setbacks and mature parkway trees, so a 26-foot truck often can't pull up the drive and we stage at the curb. That's where our 18-foot box truck earns its keep. It's the smallest we run, and it tucks into spots the big one can't, which can mean a second trip on a large load but beats carrying everything up the block. Old Town and the older homes

Covina incorporated in 1901, which makes Old Town one of the older main streets in the valley, and a good share of our residential work runs through the early-1900s neighborhoods around it. The blocks near Citrus Avenue and San Bernardino Road carry storybook bungalows and Spanish and Mediterranean-style homes from the citrus-shipping era, and the Badillo Street grid runs 1920s and 1930s bungalows into 1950s ranch homes. These older houses come with narrow doorways, vintage staircases, built-in millwork, and tight stairwells, so a wide sofa or sectional takes a careful angle. Other times we take a door off the hinges, or break down a bed frame to get it clear. A mattress we carry whole, and a box spring goes sideways or diagonal through a tight stair. We pad the staircases and built-in cabinetry on the way out, lay floor runners on the floors, and wrap furniture in moving blankets and bubble wrap to protect the trim and corners. We don't pre-measure on a site visit, so tell us the doorway and stairwell situation ahead of time. Flag any vintage or built-in pieces when you ask for the quote, so we plan the carry-out and crew size around them.

Best days and times

Covina traffic keys off the four freeways that box it in, the I-210 to the north, the I-10 to the south, the I-605 to the west, and the SR-57 to the east. The SR-57 and SR-60 confluence is one of the worst bottlenecks around, and when it backs up it pushes through-traffic onto Azusa, Grand, and Arrow Highway through the long weekday peaks. A mid-morning start, after the early crush clears, keeps the drive between your two locations short and the clock honest. Weekdays are quieter at the Grand Avenue and Barranca Avenue apartment corridors, and a loading spot is easier to arrange midweek than on a packed Saturday, since coordinating with management is already part of those moves. Moves here peak in summer, June through August, with the Covina-Valley, Charter Oak, and Azusa school calendars and apartment lease turnover, so those dates fill faster, and the best availability tends to land mid-week and mid-month.
