A Local's Guide to Moving in Tarzana

Who Lives in Tarzana, and Who's Moving There

According to the 2020-2024 American Community Survey, there are 30,942 residents in Tarzana and 12,719 housing units. Out of those 12,080 are occupied units in Tarzana's 91356 ZIP code. 7,011 were owned and the other 5,069 were rented. That means homeowners make up the larger share of households (58%). There were more single-unit homes (56.9%) than homes in multi-unit buildings (43.1%).

Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, which was founded in 1973, is a major healthcare institution. Doctors there perform specialized medical services, surgery, and emergency care. It's located at 18321 Clark Street.

Ventura Boulevard is a wide and lively street that has lots of restaurants, businesses, and shops lined around it.

Locals often prefer to live near their work or infrastructure they need. Tarzana's moves range from apartment and condo changes near Ventura Boulevard to families moving into single-family homes north and south of the boulevard, often near a school.

Some movers in Tarzana are downsizers. After their kids move out, they sell their larger house and move into a smaller condo or apartment. Usually they don't want to move far away from familiar shops and services.

    Tarzana Neighborhoods Explained

The residential areas in Tarzana are different from one side of Ventura Boulevard to the other: to the north of the boulevard, there are flatter streets. There is a mix of condos, private houses, and apartments. On the south side of Ventura, the streets rise toward the Santa Monica Mountains. There are hillside homes and larger lots. The roads there wind. The curvy streets and steep driveways can affect how a moving truck reaches a property.

In the southern part of Tarzana, near Reseda Boulevard and Mulholland Drive, there is a gated community called Mulholland Park. This area is hillside. It has larger homes and private streets. Another gated community in the hills is Silverhawk Ridge: here properties sit higher on the slopes and roads wind, so truck access is more complicated. To save yourself time and money, confirm gate codes and entry arrangements as well as parking restrictions with the management of your community before move day. Tell us the exact address and the details about the street.

On Hatteras Street, near the 101 Freeway, sits Tarzana Courts, which is an example of Tarzana's townhome communities. It has 58 units and was built in the early 1980s. In multi-story buildings with no elevator the moving team carries everything by the stairs. If your building does have an elevator, be sure to book it early. We will arrive at the time window that you get. In any case inform us about the load size, access restrictions and other details in advance.

Another well-known pocket of Tarzana is Melody Acres. It has larger residential lots and a spacious, semi-rural setting. In contrast to the busier blocks around Ventura Boulevard, here properties have more outdoor space and sometimes longer driveways. Mention if you have narrow doorways, gates, or limited space to turn, when you give us the information about your location.

Typically residential buildings around Ventura Boulevard and Reseda Boulevard are close to medical offices, restaurants, shops, and other city services. The US 101 Freeway serves Tarzana too: it cuts through the neighborhood north of Ventura Boulevard. In those busy blocks, traffic might make curbside parking along lively roads more difficult.

    When People Move into Tarzana

Book early if you plan to move to Tarzana in summer. A lot of families move during summer to finish the process before the school year starts. They try to move from early June, and up to mid-August. It is a busy season for residential moves across the whole of Los Angeles. So during summertime weekend moving dates can fill up quickly.

If you need to find out what the least busy dates are, they are the mid-week and around the mid-month dates.

In Tarzana a school gets assigned to a student depending on the exact address of their home. Usually it is the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). So before choosing a new address, some families will check their different school options. Some schools to name are Tarzana Elementary School and Reseda Charter High School.

Why Choose Adept Moving for a Tarzana Move

    Serving Tarzana since 1998

We have been helping with residential and commercial moves in Tarzana since 1998. We understand the challenges of a few stories without an elevator. We serve Tarzana Hills and know about its tight turns. Our movers are trained, background-checked and arrive in uniform.

    5.0-Rated Movers in Tarzana

We hold a 5.0 rating on Google across 2,000+ reviews. You can read some of them online on resources like Google maps or read our Yelp reviews.

A rate confirmed in a written quote

After the client provides the details such as addresses, inventory, date, access, any specialty items, need for packing, we will write the quote. The quote shows the hourly rate, the truck fee, and whether double drive time applies to your move. You will know it all before you book.

The right truck for Tarzana Hills

The truck size depends on the inventory size and street access. The 26-foot truck is our standard one, but when it can't make the turn, we use the 18-foot, our smallest. This is relevant for hills, for example streets rising toward Mulholland Drive and the Santa Monica Mountains.

    Transparent double drive time

We write a separate quote for each customer, so you will know upfront if double drive time is applicable. It depends on the distance between the two addresses. When it applies, the loaded drive counts double on the same hourly clock and at the same crew rate as the rest of the move. No fuel surcharge. No hidden fees.

    Every move is insured

We provide regular cargo insurance for each move, at no extra charge. For all of our commercial customers a standard general-liability certificate of insurance (COI) is included. And if your building requests custom additional-insured wording, we quote it separately.

We move all around Tarzana, from hillside homes south of Ventura Boulevard to houses and apartments near Reseda Boulevard. Depending on the distance between your pickup and delivery addresses, double drive time may apply. We will spell it out in your written quote if it applies, so you will know the details before booking. No fuel surcharge, no hidden fees. Check in with the city whether your street requires arrangements for curbside parking or a parking permit. Our movers will need the access code or an arranged entry window if your property is behind a gate.

Our moving teams work seven days a week, but weekend slots may fill up fast, especially during summer, so we recommend booking early.

What to Know About Moving in Tarzana

    Parking Permits and Street Rules

    Parking Permits and Street Rules

In Tarzana you may need a parking permit for the moving truck. It depends on the street you live on and whether there are posted restrictions. Tarzana is part of the Los Angeles City, so you can check in with the city by calling LADOT's Special Traffic Control Division at (213) 485-2298. Do this in advance before move day.

It is a mistake to assume that the truck can be parked at any open space at the curb. Parking can be restricted by fire hydrants, red curbs, driveways, and posted signs. If you need space reserved temporarily to load or unload the truck, we ask you to contact the relevant city department early.

Some people leave these tasks until the last day before moving, which is a common pitfall. The city needs to receive your notice in advance. For example, if you're going to move on a Saturday, don't wait to contact LADOT until Friday. That way you will have time to change plans if the space you requested cannot be reserved. Inform us about any access or parking restrictions beforehand, so the moving team can arrive prepared.

Building Access Along Ventura Boulevard and at Tarzana's Commercial Properties

Building Access Along Ventura Boulevard and at Tarzana's Commercial Properties

One of Tarzana's main commercial corridors is Ventura Boulevard. On this street you will find restaurants, offices, and retail businesses. If you're a resident moving in or out of an apartment building or you want to move a commercial property along the boulevard, ask the building management or HOA where the truck can stop. Sometimes the main entrance isn't designed for moving bulky furniture. In that case we will need to use a separate service entrance. If the building has a loading area, book it.

Around lively city locations like offices or shops, shared parking lots may fill up fast. That's why we recommend asking your property manager if you need to book a freight elevator or a parking spot. Inform us about the time slot and we will plan our arrival to it.

Before a commercial building can allow movers onto the property, they often need a Certificate of Insurance. A standard COI with general liability coverage is included for each commercial client at no additional charge. We quote custom additional-insured wording separately, so let us know if you need it.

On any of our moves we wrap the furniture in moving blankets to protect it. On both residential and commercial moves floor runners are laid down along the carry path to protect flooring.

We ask our clients to send us the property's requirements beforehand. Then we can avoid resolving building's access rules after arrival, as our team will be already prepared.

The Gated Communities in Tarzana's Hills

The Gated Communities in Tarzana's Hills

Mulholland Park and Silverhawk Ridge south of Ventura Boulevard are examples of gated residential communities in Tarzana. There are larger homes, private roads, and winding streets in these hillside neighborhoods. It is important to give us the exact address and access instructions, as there are properties with limited space for a moving truck to turn around. If we know that our standard 26-foot truck won't fit, we use the 18-foot truck, which is the smallest in our fleet.

Another factor that can affect the move is property layout: if the house has a long driveway, several flights of stairs, or a steep approach, the team may need more carrying time than in a home with direct access from the street. To avoid unnecessary costs, tell us about these conditions when requesting a quote.

If you're moving large furniture like bed frames, bulky cabinets or sectional sofas, it can be challenging in hillside homes. This furniture may need to be disassembled to fit through doorways or to be moved around tight staircases. Mention your oversized items in advance, so the crew can plan accordingly.

Tarzana's Older Housing and Residential Streets

Tarzana's Older Housing and Residential Streets

Tarzana also has some established residential streets with mid-century houses. There is an example in the city's SurveyLA historic resources survey: the Redwing-Henshaw Residential Historic District, one of Tarzana's mid-century Ranch-house neighborhoods. There is a house in the district on Henshaw Street dated to 1956.

These older houses often have garages that are attached and driveways with limited room for staging furniture. The driveway's angle and the distance from the curb to the front door also may add to the carry time, especially on sloped streets. Measure the narrowest doorway in your home and inform us before the move.

If vehicles are already lined up on both sides of the street, parking a moving truck can be complicated. Tell us about steep driveways, stairs, and any parking restrictions before moving day.

Best Moving Days and Times in Tarzana

Best Moving Days and Times in Tarzana

Generally, our best availability is on mid-week dates and mid-month dates. Call us in advance if you want to reserve a specific day that works for your schedule.

To avoid wasting time, we recommend accounting for traffic, especially during the rush hour. Mid-morning time may be a good option, but still, choosing the best departure time depends on the route and building access. The US 101 Freeway cuts through the northern part of Tarzana and Ventura Boulevard is a lively street with traffic from nearby businesses. Reseda Boulevard is another important local route, connecting residential areas south of Ventura Boulevard with the freeway corridor. Pickup time needs to be discussed in advance, particularly if you are moving in or out of a busy commercial building or a gated hillside property.

Highly recommend them, and props to Ilia, Serge, Nick for crushing a complicated move for us! ----Longer version---- We've now used Adept twice and both times it was as great an experience as you could ask for. The quote process is quick and straightforward by phone, and they were incredibly flexible when we had to change the date of our move. A Residential Move from Donna Avenue to Hatteras Street in Tarzana

In May, Ivan and I were assigned to handle a residential move from a single-family home on Donna Avenue to a gated condominium complex on Hatteras Street in Tarzana.

The client called us two weeks before the move and said that we could park at the curb on Donna Avenue as well as Hatteras Street. She asked us to pack her personal belongings, take apart the mirrored dressing table and the vintage roll-top desk and bring them down from the second floor.

    The Move in Brief

    • Destination: Hatteras Street, gated condominium complex
    • Property type: Single-family home to condominium
    • Crew: A team of two movers
    • Inventory: 6 large boxes, 12 medium boxes, 10 wardrobe cartons, 4 plastic bins, a white desk chair, an antique bookcase, a floor lamp, a vintage roll-top desk, a sewing machine, a serger, a side table, 3 floating shelves, 2 wooden cabinets, a mirrored dressing table.

    Donna Avenue Pickup

We parked our 26-foot truck at the curb right next to the two-story single-family house. We had our disposable packing materials with us: stretch wrap, boxes, tape, packing paper, and bubble wrap. We bill these materials separately from our regular hourly rate. We laid down our floor runners along the carry path.

Upstairs my main task was to collect personal belongings such as books, a bedside clock, a jewelry box, photos and other items. I used bubble wrap to wrap them. Meanwhile Ivan disassembled the mirrored dressing table and the vintage roll-top desk. I also gathered clothes and hung them in our wardrobe cartons. Then I helped Ivan wrap the disassembled furniture in moving blankets and stretch wrap to protect its surfaces during transport. I wrapped all the furniture in moving blankets before it left the house, including the antique bookcase. Ivan carried down the boxes and wardrobe cartons that were ready, and I packed the floor lamp into one of the boxes. We handled the six large boxes together, stacking them inside the truck along the wall. Then Ivan and I went back upstairs and brought down the white desk chair. We carried all the furniture, along with the sewing machine and the serger, into the truck, as well as four plastic bins, the remaining wardrobe cartons and the packed floor lamp.

    Hatteras Street Drop-off

At Hatteras Street we stopped the truck at the curb near the gated condominium complex. The client told us the gate code beforehand, so we went inside and laid down floor runners. Using our hand trucks, we wheeled the large and medium boxes into the designated room the client showed us. We kept the wardrobe cartons in the upright position while carrying them. After that we went back to the truck and brought in all the remaining furniture, including the mirrored dressing table and the vintage roll-top desk, which Ivan put back together. I carried the four plastic bins into the room. The client showed us where she wanted to place her belongings. I unpacked the large and medium-sized boxes and put books into the antique bookcase, along with other items in their places. Ivan unpacked the floor lamp and set it near the antique bookcase. Then I unpacked the wardrobe cartons and put the clothes into a closet that was in the room.

A Residential Move from Friar Street to Lindley Avenue in Tarzana

A Residential Move from Friar Street to Lindley Avenue in Tarzana

In August we handled a move from a single-family house on Friar Street to a townhouse on Lindley Avenue in Tarzana.

The client confirmed that we could park at the curb on residential Friar Street near the house entrance. He also told us that he wanted the bedroom furniture carried up to the second floor of the townhouse. At the destination on Lindley Avenue the client had arranged a parking space in the townhome's shared driveway.

We used our standard 26-foot truck for this move. Zurab, Emil, and I handled this job together.

    Moving Job Summary

    • Pickup: Friar Street, Tarzana
    • Destination: Lindley Avenue, Tarzana
    • Property type: Single-family house to a townhouse complex
    • Crew: A team of three movers
    • Inventory: A wooden dresser, a queen bed frame with a mattress, a desk with an office chair, a bookshelf, a wardrobe, a king bed frame with a mattress, a round coffee table, a sectional couch, a rug, a framed painting, 3 nightstands, a floor lamp, a fridge, 4 chairs, a rocking chair, a dining table, a kitchen island cart, a kitchen hutch, 5 fragile boxes and 7 regular boxes.

    Pickup on Friar Street

We arrived on Friar Street in the morning, as was arranged with the client. Zurab and I started working in two separate bedrooms: I took apart the queen bed frame and Zurab unscrewed the king-sized bed frame. Emil wrapped the furniture in our moving blankets and stretch wrap, as we did with every piece before they left the house. The stretch wrap is billed separately as a disposable material, when we use it. Using our hand trucks, Zurab, Emil and I carried the bed frames into the truck along with the wooden dresser, two mattresses, the desk with the office chair, the bookshelf, the rug, the floor lamp, three nightstands and the wardrobe. Then Emil and I handled the round coffee table, while Zurab took apart the sectional. After that Emil and Zurab loaded it as well as other furniture from the living room. I brought the framed painting and pre-packed boxes including the fragile ones into the truck. Zurab disassembled the rocking chair. Then Emil and I loaded it and the four chairs. The hardest task in the kitchen was to move the fridge and we did it all together. Then Zurab unscrewed the legs from the dining table while Emil and I carried the island cart and the kitchen hutch into the truck. After we loaded the dining table, we checked that nothing could shift during transportation.

    Drop-off on Lindley Avenue

We parked in the shared driveway and lowered the liftgate. Emil and I unloaded the lighter kitchen furniture and Zurab screwed the legs back onto the dining table. Then all three of us carried the fridge into the kitchen. Emil and I brought the round coffee table, the rug, the floor lamp, the four chairs and parts of the sectional. Zurab brought the framed painting and boxes. Then he put the sectional and the rocking chair back together.

Adept Moving mover wheeling a blanket-wrapped piece on a hand truck inside the truck

The part that needed extra attention was carrying the bedroom furniture upstairs. Emil helped me to carry the bed frames first and then we assembled them in the bedrooms. After that we put the mattresses on top. We had to tilt and angle the wooden dresser, the wardrobe and the desk a few times, so they would fit on the staircase. We placed them as the client instructed us. Then Zurab helped Emil and me bring the office chair, the nightstands, and the bookshelf up the stairs.
