An Apartment-to-House Move from Woodman Ave to Leadwell St in Van Nuys

In early June we helped a family that outgrew their apartment on Woodman Ave move to a detached house on Leadwell St. Woodman Avenue is a wide and busy arterial street with apartment communities and shared parking areas. Leadwell Street is narrower and quieter than Woodman Avenue, with residential houses and private driveways.

This family contacted us almost a month before the moving date and confirmed that the apartment complex had space to park our truck. They also booked an elevator and told us that they were moving to a larger property that has a convenient private driveway. We used our standard 26-foot truck. Alex and Maxim came with me.

The job at a glance

  • Starting point: Woodman Ave, Van Nuys
  • Destination: Leadwell St, Van Nuys
  • Property Type: Apartment to a two-story detached house
  • Crew: Three movers
  • Inventory: An L-shaped sectional sofa, 60-inch TV and a TV stand, a rug, bed with mattress and box spring, 2-drawer filing cabinet, 6-drawer chest, wall painting, 2 bar stools, a compact desk with office chair, a small bookshelf, a coffee table, full-length floor mirror, a floor lamp, a microwave oven, 20 household boxes, and 5 wardrobe cartons.

Loading on Woodman Avenue

When we arrived and parked our 26-foot truck on surface parking, we saw that the family was prepared: the entrance was cleared and all the belongings were packed in boxes.

Each of us had their own task inside: Alex and I started taking apart the large L-shaped sectional sofa. Before any furniture left the apartment, we wrapped every piece of furniture in moving blankets. Maxim carried all 20 boxes to our truck to clear the room. When he finished that, I asked him to transfer the clothing into our wardrobe cartons, which we brought with us. Maxim and I carried the parts of the sectional piece by piece to the elevator, where Alex operated the elevator. Maneuvering big furniture pieces through the shared common areas required extra care and we had to turn the pieces a few times. In the truck we secured it against the wall. After that I packed the 60-inch TV into its original box. Maxim took the TV stand, and we loaded the furniture onto the elevator that the family had booked and took it down to the truck. There, the TV was placed upright and securely positioned against the truck wall, so it wouldn't shift during transportation. Then Alex brought a pre-packed rug and the wall painting to the truck, while I was taking apart the bed frame. Maxim handled the mattress and the box spring. The 2-drawer filing cabinet, 6-drawer chest, 2 bar stools, a microwave, a floor lamp, a small bookshelf and the coffee table followed. I had Alex and Maxim handle the compact desk with an office chair, and transferred the pre-packed full-length floor mirror myself.

Delivery to Leadwell Street

Since we did not leave Van Nuys, the drive was short. Once we reached Leadwell Street, we parked at the private driveway and started unloading from there. The direct access made it easier to move the sectional, as well as the 2-drawer filing cabinet and the TV stand. The family had already planned how they wanted the furniture to be placed around the house. I carried the mattress, the bed frame and the box spring into the bedroom. Maxim transferred the TV and Alex took care of the 2 bar stools and a small bookshelf. Alex wheeled a 6-drawer chest on a hand truck to the living room. We placed the compact desk with an office chair where the family asked us.

The family had worried that the sectional sofa would be challenging for us to transport, but it was taken apart and went through the hallways and elevator. Then we put it back together in the living room. After a final walkthrough, they thanked us and confirmed that everything was in order.
